It's not clear to me from your post whether your loved one was one of the 3000 people who died on 9/11 at the World Trade Center or one of the 10,000 people who died on the same day at other places in the US.

And wow, I'm really surprised by the violence of your response. I've read my original post again, and I can't see anything in it that demeans or makes light of the loss suffered by people whose friends or family have died in nationally televised tragedies. Certainly I had no intention of doing so.

My point is that people around us suffer losses in less newsworthy event all the time. Our emotional responses to tragedies like what's happened in VA do us credit, but we haven't really come to terms with them unless we recognize the ubiquity of death and mourning in human life, and resolve to treat others with more care and consideration--rather, say, than calling them fucking assholes at the drop of a hat.

I have to agree w/ya. Death affects EVERYONE. Was VA's incident any more or less tragic than the THOUSANDS that are killed every year by drunk drivers? Than the TENS of THOUSANDS killed by OUR country in the name of "FREEDOM"? Freedom---give m a F'n break!
In the grand scheme NO one's death means ANYTHING at all---EXCEPT to the people who loved the one(s) who died (and what ever GOD you pray to). If we all paid attention to & mourned everyone who died from stray bullets, drunk drivers, murder, suicides, etc, then we'd all be unable to function because we'd all be sobbing uncontrollably & depressed beyond the ability to function. So the news has to report on the more sensational deaths, Columbine, 9/11, VA Tech, etc. Last week here in my area there was a father who committed suicide after he killed his 2yr old daughter & 9 month old son, & the wife is nowhere to be found---isn't this news worthy as well? And TRAGIC? To my mind it IS at least a little more tragic when young children die than when adults do. But we have to compartmentalize our lives & mostly pay attention to our own "tragedies", but that's no reason to not sometimes stop & think of others losses.

I didn't take what you said as taking the death of anyone as unimportant. And DIRE---come on brother/sister, no need to call anyone names here.

Peace---and LOVE, to all of you.

the +3000 dead in that terrorist attack mean more to me than drunk driving deaths, we all take a real risk when we get behind the wheel-as you point out. But the +3000 who died in 9-11 were murdered by Islamofasict thugs, and lots of ignorant folks around the world were dancin in the streets with joy as a result. A cold blooded mass murder.
BIG F'n DIFFERENCE!

You're absolutely right, it should mean more that so many were killed on 9/11---but...ALL deaths not attributed to failing health are pretty much senseless (even some who die from their "failing health" were senseless deaths--smoking, drug overdose, STUPIDITY)whether by someone driving drunk, or someone held hostage in a plane that flies into a building.

A litlle off topic here---anyone (I'm not speaking to you directly Rasta) who believes that 9/11 happened because of someone else's thinking that Americans are "free" needs to stop listening to the neo-cons & other ultra conservatives. Come on, we weren't attacked because we drink coke, eat hamburgers, watch baseball, drive between states without our papers, drink alcohol, watch pretty much waht we want on TV, say & think what we want etc, etc, etc.

Anyway, once again---Peace AND Love.
